Peacocks scatter as you turn off Suid-Agter-Paarl Road and drive up to Fairview. Past the famous goat tower, which delights adults and children alike, a warm welcome awaits in the tasting room, where a large selection of wines and cheeses are to be sampled. When Charles Back's grandfather bought the farm in 1938, wine-making was already established - folklore tells of a doctor who prescribed teaspoons of the farm's wines to ill children. Charles Back was recognised as South African Wine Maker of the Year in 1996. Several of the estate's wines have also won acclaim at prestigious events.
Travel to Somerset-West via Stellenbosch with views of the Strand, visiting romantic Vergelegen
Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away", was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long and fascinating history since that time. Enjoy lunch at the famous Lady Phillips Restaurant at Vergelegen, and be charmed by not only the scenery and history, but also by this restaurant built in memory of 'no ordinary woman', Lady Florence Phillips.

The town of Stellenbosch lies in the green and fertile valley of the Eerste ("first") River, only 41 km from Cape Town and in the heart of the South African winelands. It is the second oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town and was founded by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1679, who named it after him.
One cannot help but stand in awe of the magnificent countryside surrounding the town of Stellenbosch. Nestled in one of the world's most beautiful valleys, it is overlooked by the forested heights of Papegaaiberg (Parrot Mountain).
The town itself is just as charming as its setting with furrows and oak trees, some dating from the 19th century, lining the streets. Thick-walled, lime washed buildings with thatched roofs and timberwork of stinkwood and yellowwood, dating from the same era, have been wonderfully preserved. One can see it at its best, perhaps, along Dorp Street, which has the longest row of historic buildings in the country and around Die Braak, the village green once used for military parades and festivals.
The Village Museum in Reyneveld Street is a collection of these historic houses dating from a number of eras, meticulously restored and furnished in period style, the gardens planted with the flowers, shrubs and trees that would have graced the original homes.

Franschhoek is a small rural village situated about 45 minutes from Cape Town in the heart of the Cape Winelands, with spectacular vineyards planted 300 years ago by the French Huguenots who discovered the valley. The village is among the top five tourist destinations in South Africa, and is situated in a beautiful valley of award winning vineyards between towering mountains. Cape Town, on the south western corner of Africa, has a world of feathers that amounts to a staggering 89 species, far greater than the endemic bird totals of most countries.
57 of the Southern Africa's endemic species and 32 of the near endemic species are available on day trips from Cape Town, and most of these can be found reasonably easily with appropriate local knowledge.
We will start our tour by strolling through Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden - the beautiful gardens offer good opportunities to view Cape Sugarbird, Orangebreasted Sunbird and occasionally Knysna Warbler.
Not to be missed is The World of Birds in Hout Bay: A bird and wildlife sanctuary with over 3000 birds in natural surroundings. Visitors are able to walk through the aviaries and experience close-up encounters with cranes and guineafowl, monkeys and meerkats, owls and eagles. The sanctuary also cares for injured birds and is a breeding centre for threatened species.
We will have lunch in Hout Bay Harbour. Hout Bay, still fondly referred to as a "village" by local residents, not only offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, but the area is steeped in history and there are a host of possible activities from bird watching to fine dining. Dwarfed by mountains on all sides, it is one of only a few areas in South Africa which is surrounded by national parks.
From here we will travel over Chapman's Peak Drive, known to have some of the most magnificent views in the world.
We will take you to Boulders Beach close to Simon's Town, and introduce you to the famous jackass penguin, a flightless seabird, found nowhere in the world except off the coast of southern Africa.
The penguins are best viewed from Foxy Beach at Boulders, where newly constructed boardwalks take visitors to within a few metres of the birds.
Surrounded by the beauty of our natural heritage and indigenous flora, the African Penguins coexist with human beings in the most natural of ways. Swimming, bathing and tanning side by side with these interesting birds, has made Boulders Beach world famous.
The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve at Cape Point is the highlight of our tour as it has a selection of 250 species of birds.

Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park. Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere. During the spring the strandveld is embroidered with a tapestry of multi-hued flowers, while in the Postberg section many antelope are to be seen in a setting that is as unique as it is idyllic.
120,000 years ago a young woman walked down the wet dunes next to the Langebaan lagoon, perhaps in search of food. Nick-named 'Eve', her perfectly preserved footprints were found in 1995. This caused great excitement around the world, as it lends credence to the ‘Out of Africa’ evolutionary theory that man originated in Africa before moving north.
The small fishing village of Paternoster (Cape Columbine) has a beautiful, long, deserted beach to offer.
Around the corner is St Helena Bay which was discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1497.
Further north, Velddrif is situated at the mouth of the Berg River, and the estuary attracts large numbers of flamingos, spoonbills, avocets and glossy ibis.

Cape Town and its surroundings offer unique seasonal specialities - like the spectacular floral displays that blanket the West Coast during the Spring Flower season.
The land looks dry, but hosts a range of fascinating plants, particularly the bizarre array of succulent semi-desert plants. It comes alive in spring when millions upon millions of flowers blossom to carpet the earth in a kaleidescope of colour.

Wine, great estates, divine food and heavenly scenery meld into one glorious tapestry in this enchanting journey of discovery.
This tour will take you through the wheatfields of the Swartland and we will visit delightful villages such as Riebeeck Kasteel and Tulbagh.
It is an all year round destination. The climate is Mediterranean. The summers are hot. Winters are pleasant and mild.
The Swartland begins some 50 kilometres north of Cape Town and consists of the regions between the towns of Malmesbury in the south, Darling in the west, Piketberg in the north and the Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel in the east. Jan van Riebeek called this softly undulating land between mighty mountain ranges "Het Zwarte Land" (the Black Land) because of the endemic Renoster shrubs. After the rains, mainly in winter, they turn black. The wide fertile plain is the bread basket of Cape Town with its golden yellow wheatfields reaching up to the foot of the mountains, interrupted by wine, fruit and vegetable plantations.
The Riebeek Valley is the centre of wine production. In the beautiful twin hamlets of Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel, at the foot of the Kasteelberg, artists and arts & crafts people have settled.
The atmosphere is authentically rural. On the Swartland Wine Route you can visit the different wine farms and taste their products.
The biggest co-operative wine cellar in South Africa is one of the highlights of the Swartland Wine Route whose six cellars can be found within forty minutes from Cape Town. These include those at Piketberg and Porterville. Swartland Wine Cellar's policy of paying for quality rather than quantity when buying its grapes has ensured a string of awards for their extensive range of forty-seven wines. The cellar's most well-known product is the sweet, honey-flavoured nectar called Hanepoot (Muscat d' Alexandrie) which is popular as a dessert wine.
A visit to Darling, founded in 1853, is worthwhile. In thís town there are numerous beautiful Victorian houses, the Butter Museum, which takes a look at the history of butter making, and the little theatre of the resident cabaretist Peter Dirk Uys alias Evita Bezuidenhout. During the wildflower season, after the first rainfalls in spring, the town is surrounded by carpets of rich floral colours.

The Constantia Wine Route is named after the original farm Constantia, whose legendary wines were sought after by the 18th and 19th century European aristocracy, requested by Napoleon, and praised by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. The historic Constantia Valley has now been re-established as one of the finest wine-growing areas of the Cape.
Constantia is the birthplace of the wine farming industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful historical valley it is no wonder the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, chose this location for his farm, Groot Constantia.
The vineyards are situated on gentle slopes not far from the sea, and the cool breezes blowing in off two oceans are an important influence. They provide ideal cool conditions, which slow down the ripening process of the grapes and create a unique wine-growing environment.

A day filled with Cape splendour at its best - as this tour combines Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, among the most beautiful and diverse in the world, with Constantia, the oldest of South Africa's wine-growing regions, south of Kirstenbosch.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a floral treasure, famous for its beauty and the diversity of the Cape flora it displays. The setting is magnificent, against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, and only 13 km outside of Cape Town.
The estate covers 528 hectares, and only indigenous South African plants are grown here. A diverse range of fynbos flora and forest grows naturally on the mountainside, and a number of trails lead through the natural Garden. The cultivated garden (36 hectares) displays collections of South African plants, particularly those from the winter rainfall region of the country.
Special features:
The Botanical Society Conservatory displays South African plants which cannot be grown in the outdoor gardens. The conservatory features plants from a range of natural habitats, from high mountain peaks and shady forests to hot, dry deserts. In the main house, a large baobab tree dominates a display of succulents from the arid regions of Southern Africa. Special collections of bulbs, ferns and alpines can be seen in smaller corner houses.
The Peninsula garden features some of the 2 500 plant species found on the Cape Peninsula.
In the Water-wise garden you can learn how to create a garden which requires far less water and maintenance than a conventional garden.

The oldest part of the Garden is The Dell, a lovely oasis of tranquility featuring Colonel Bird's Bath, tree ferns and a variety of shade-loving plants.
The Protea garden is exceptionally spectacular in winter and spring. During these months the proteas (family Proteaceae), cone bushes and serrurias are in flower. In early summer, pincushions provide a colourful display in yellow, orange and red.
The Restio garden focuses on the incredible variety of texture and form found in the reed family (Restionaceae).
The Kirstenbosch Restaurant caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Groot Constantia
The estate of Groot Constantia was founded as early as 1685 and assigned to the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, as an experimental farm for agricultural produce.
Today Groot Constantia welcomes its visitors with the tranquility and beauty that charmed Simon van der Stel all those years ago.
The Manor House, with its elegant gables, is a magnificent example of Cape Dutch architecture. Today it houses a cultural history museum, portraying the early years of Groot Constantia.
The Cloete Cellar, the original wine cellar, dates back to 1791 and houses a Wine Museum, exhibiting various wine making equipment and especially wine storage and wine drinking vessels. The beautiful pediment gable above the cellar is one of sculptor Anton Anreith's masterpieces.
Groot Constantia produces a range of excellent wines, and has over the years won numerous awards for both reds and whites. The wines may be tasted and bought at the tasting cellar, locally known as Bertram's Cellar, at the entrance of the Estate. There is also a souvenir and gift shop. In the production and maturation Cellar, tours and tastings take place daily.
Visitors are offered a choice of excellent dining on the Estate. The Tavern Restaurant, built in the original bottling and maturation cellar, offers a variety of continental dishes and caters for larger functions. The graceful Jonkershuis Restaurant in the historic core of the Estate serves Cape Malay, classical and contemporary cuisine. What could be more satisfying than a delicious meal and a glass of excellent wine, surrounded by atmosphere and architecture, vineyards and breathtaking views.

Some of the oldest and newest museums as well as the Castle of Good Hope are found in the city centre. The cobbled streets of the Bo-Kaap, its museum and the oldest Mosque in the country are definate highlights. In the Southern suburbs, a stone's throw away from the centre of town, is the oldest wine estate in the country, Groot Constantia.
There are some two hundred and fifty different routes that can be walked up Table Mountain for those wishing to get close to the fauna and flora. Lion's Head can also be walked at full moon and many other short or longer hikes on the outskirts of the city centre can be found e.g. Constantia, Kalk Bay Caves, Newlands Forest and Silvermine to name a few.
The heart of Cape Town has moved from the city centre to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, which is a historical site as well as a working harbour. It offers everything from home-made arts and crafts, top boutiques, supermarkets, clothing stores, restaurants, take-aways and hotels, cinema theatres, the Telkom Exploratorium and the Two Oceans Aquarium.
There are many businesses in the city centre and shopping centres like the Golden Acre, flower sellers at Trafalgar Square, markets at the Grand Parade and Greenmarket Square, the Pan African market in Long Street as well as excellent coffee shops and restaurants, museums and art galleries. At night there are clubs, pubs and theatres to visit.
